Tonga Double Earthquake
The original papers revealing this apparently rare phenomenon appeared in the 19 August edition of Nature (466).
- The 2009 Samoa–Tonga great earthquake triggered doublet;Thorne Lay, Charles J. Ammon, Hiroo Kanamori, Luis Rivera, Keith D. Koper & Alexander R. Hutko; Nature 466 , 964–968 (19 August 2010)
- Near-simultaneous great earthquakes at Tongan megathrust and outer rise in September 2009; J. Beavan, X. Wang, C. Holden, K. Wilson, W. Power, G. Prasetya, M. Bevis & R. Kautoke,;Nature 466 , 959–963 (19 August 2010)
There’s a summary of the discovery at the BBC and Yahoo! news.
Pakistan Floods
The Wikipedia page ont he 2010 Pakistan Floods is a good place to get a handle on the disaster.
The NASA Earth Observatory satellite photos comparing last year’s with this years monsoon flooding can be found here.
And if you can spare a few dollars, there’s 20 million people who are in dia need of aid. There’s a list of charities here.
The impressive debris flow video we mentioned can be found at Dave’s Landslide Blog.
Haiti Earthquake
The 2010 Haiti earthquake was caused by a previously unknown fault. The BBC has a summary.
And there’s a brilliant summary page for the earthquake, including detailed information on the fault line which ruptured, on a page written by Eric Calais of Purdue University, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science.
California Quake
The paper mentioning the periodically regular rupturing of the San Adreas Fault in the Carizzo Plain is:
- Century-long average time intervals between earthquake ruptures of the San Andreas fault in the Carrizo Plain, California; Sinan O. Akçiz, Lisa Grant Ludwig, J Ramon Arrowsmith and Olaf Zielke; Geology; September 2010; v. 38; no. 9; p. 787-790
There’s a good write up of the paper at Arrowsmith Blog.
