The Pod Clast. Is anyone interested?
I’ve wanted to set up a podcast consisting of people from the geoblogsphere for quite some time now. Who’s interested and what’s the plan?
When I launched this site I intended to have an accompanying podcast (or podclast, hence the domain name podclast.com redirecting here), as an integral part of my online geological musings. It seems I’m not the only one who’s thought of this. Dave Schumaker over at Geology News recently posted his thoughts on the USGS corecast and expressed similar interests.
I’m interested in getting a geoblogosphere round-table podcast going (be it called the podclast or otherwise) and I’d like to know who else is keen. Ideally it’ll be once a fortnight or once a month (in a similar vein to The Accretionary Wedge). It’ll be fairly conversational and accessable to the general public, and it’ll feature 3-4 regular contributors.
If you’re interested in helping, contributing or just have some ideas, drop me a comment below (in order to avoid spam I have to approve all first-time commenters), or email me at chris [the regular sysmbol] goodschist.com. Let’s get this thing rolling.

Hah, awesome. I love the name for it too. Obviously, I’m definitely interested.

Cool
Once this percolates through the internet we could have a team ready to go.

I think it sounds like a cool idea. I have some travel upcoming in the next month, so I’ll be sporadic on the blogging front for a few weeks…but, keep me in the loop.

It sounds like a fascinating idea. What I do not grasp, yet, is what exactly you want the podcasts to cover (or maybe I overlook something on your blog). I think you need to formulate more exactly what you and others will be podcasting about otherwise you are running the risk of loosing sight of your goals. I’d sure like to see and listen to them though once it get’s going!

“What I do not grasp, yet, is what exactly you want the podcasts to cover” - Well, any and all geological news or sub sciences that interest the panel. If you’ve heard the podcast “The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe” (and I highly recommend it) you’ll have a good idea of what I’d like to be shooting for. But with a geological bent rather than a skeptical one.
For example, this week if we were recording, we’d be discussing the recent activity on Kilauea, with perhaps a digression into the differences between subduction-driven and “hot spot” volcanics. A discussion, perhaps if we get a palaeontologist on board, of Guarinisuchus munizi (a marine crocodile fossil that was recently found), and how its progression across the globe, along with other members of the Thalattosuchia group in the fossil record relates to the break-up of Pangea.
Anything and everything related to geology, in a relaxed, accessible style (again, have a listen to the Skeptic’s Guide).

I’ve also thought for a long time about doing a “Gillmor Gang/NewsGang” style podcast for the geoblogosphere. If you want to organize it, I’d be happy to participate. I’m also willing to act as a sounding board for ideas/questions both topical and technical that you might want to discuss in preparation for this effort or in view of its early results.

Chris,
This is Dave Hebert from the USGS podcast team. Thanks for mentioning CoreCast along with Dave S. If you have thoughts on topics or other podcast ideas/questions, let us know at corecast@usgs.gov. You can also submit a question for CoreFacts, our quick, daily science Q&A podcast, at http://www.usgs.gov/corefacts. Thanks!

Chris, thanks for you explaination. I think I understand what you are trying to do. Looking at “The Skeptics Guide to the Univers” was a very entertaining activity today and I truly enjoyed it.
You should definitly go ahead with your plans on podcasts!

So what’s the plan, Chris? Are we going to do this?

“So what’s the plan, Chris? Are we going to do this?”
Yes, the feedback has been positive and everything’s almost in place for the recording (I have to buy a little hardware and a piece of software over the next few days).
Right now I’m aiming for the first episode to be recorded around 11am on Sun the 13th NZ time (5pm pacific/8pm eastern on the 19th in the US, or 2300 GMT (on the 12th) - so work out you’re own timezone). But that time/date is pretty flexible for now.
Dave Schumaker sounds interested and if you’re keen to join the panel too, I’ll add you to the list of people I’ll email over the weekend. I’ll make another post regarding the first episode shortly and get some ideas floated for subject ideas and a list of people wanting to join the panel.
